Dubai World Trade Centre

1) Dubai World Trade Centre

If you want to take in an exhibition while you are in the city, you will be sure to find an excellent one at the Dubai World Trade Centre on Sheik Zayed Road.

The centre was built in 1979, commissioned by H.H. Sheik Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum. The centre incorporated the 149 meter-high original tower which was built in 1978. The tower was the first high-rise building on the Road. It contains residential apartments and offices; it also houses various consulates: Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Japan, the USA and Turkey.

The vast centre comprises the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, residential apartments and 8 exhibitions halls. Some very exciting events take place at the Centre, such as the Dubai International Horse Fair, the Dubai International Boat Show and if you are lucky enough to be here in October, you can take part in the International Exhibition of Sweets and Snacks, Middle East – a delight of confectioneries, patisseries, snacks and ice-cream.

The Centre is also a favorite venue for holding weddings and receptions. You have the choice of a small intimate ceremony or a large affair with up to 6500 guests. There are also six elegant ballrooms to choose from and a large choice of themes, from a simple “Oriental” affair to a “Royal” wedding with all the trimmings.

2) Dubai International Convention & Exhibition Center

The Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre is fast becoming the most fashionable place in the Middle East to hold a conference, a meeting, a wedding or simply to visit one of the many exhibitions that are routinely held here.

The DICEC, as it is known, opened in 2003 as part of the Dubai World Trade Centre. At the beginning it boasted two halls, the Sheik Maktoum Hall and the Sheik Rashid Hall with a combined meeting area of 10000 square metres. There were also 9 other halls interconnected by the concourse. In the middle is the Al Multaqua Ballroom, the ideal venue for banquets, weddings, private parties and art exhibitions.

Every year in November the Dubai International Motor Show and the Dubai International Jewelry Week are held here and both shows attract millions of visitors. The centre also houses 19 meeting rooms where everything is organized to the top level executives who hire them, from light and sound to food and drink.

A new extension to the Centre are the Sheik Saeed Halls comprising 25,000 square metres of exhibition space spread over four halls. The centerpiece of the DICEC is the wonderful Trade Centre Arena – the largest arena in the Middle East, open for concerts and other entertainment events, as well as official athletic and sports events.

Emirates Towers

3) Emirates Towers (must see)

Dubai’s beautiful and elegant skyscrapers are to be found along Sheik Zayed Road and perhaps the most intriguing of them all are the twin Emirates Towers which opened in 2000.

These towers comprise the Emirates Office Tower, 355 meters high and the Jumeirah Emirates Tower, 309 meters high. What, you might ask, makes them intriguing? First of all, their exterior curtain walls are constructed of aluminum panels, copper and silver reflecting glass, so they reflect back the colours of the sky and the surrounding area, making them seem to change as you walk around them.

The second intriguing point is that although the office tower is the taller, it has 54 storeys, while its smaller twin has 56 storeys. This is easily explained by the difference in the floor-to-ceiling height but is a pleasing paradox nonetheless. The towers are connected by “The Boulevard”, a two storey shopping centre.

The towers are set in 42 acres of lovely gardens with a lake, waterfalls and seating areas in the shade of tall palm-trees. The office tower is not open to the public, but the residential tower has a very good bar on the 51st floor and a restaurant on the 52nd floor, both of which are open to non-residents.

Rose Tower

4) Rose Tower

The Rose Tower stands on Sheik Zayed Road and at 333 metres high, it is actually the tallest hotel block in the world.

The tower is built of concrete and steel and has a curtain wall of light grey and dark blue glass. The tapered roof has a spire of 15 metres. It has 72 storeys and is a top-class appart/hotel with 482 luxury two and three bedroom apartments.

The hotel is run by the Rotana Chain, which in turn is part of the Saudi Hotel Chain. Although Dubai is pretty relaxed about drinking rules, the Rose Tower is the first hotel in the city that doesn’t serve alcohol. There are also rooms that are exclusively non-smoking. Each room has tea and coffee making facilities and a mini bar full of fruit juice and spring water.

The Petals Restaurant on the first floor is beautifully decorated and offers an international menu. The Aquarius Pool Café serves light health-food snacks and drinks, while the Rose Café offers afternoon tea, light snacks and delicious home-made pastries.

The Bodyline Leisure and Fitness Club has a large swimming pool and a fully equipped gym. There are saunas, Jacuzzis, steam rooms and massage rooms. These amenities are separate for men and women.

Dubai Mall

5) Dubai Mall

The Dubai Mall is the world's largest-ever mall opening in retail history. You will find here a great variety of shopping. There is also a good selection of restaurants. Besides that here is located an indoor aquarium and an ice rink.
6
Burj Khalifa

6) Burj Khalifa (must see)

For many years now Dubai has been looking for alternative income outside the oil business and has expanded into tourism. Many amazing skyscrapers have gone up and it is in the new Downtown Dubai area that you will find yourself at the foot of Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world.

This incredible tower is also incredibly beautiful, looking as if it has just stepped out of a Sci-Fi movie. It stands 829.84 metres high in a 27-acre park with 6 palm tree-lined paths, six water features, gardens, and flowering trees. In a country where water is scarce, this lovely park is kept flourishing by using the water created by the building’s condensation system.

The tower boasts 160 storeys of residences, offices and other attractions, 46 storeys of maintenance, broadcasting and communications areas and 2 underground parking lots. It’s enough to make you giddy just to stand on the ground looking up to the spire far away on the top!

The residences are appart/hotels and are extremely luxurious, with all mod-cons, including Internet connection by Wi-Fi and large, flat-screened televisions. On the 76th floor there is a swimming pool, on the 122nd floor there is an excellent restaurant, on the 124th floor you can admire the view from the observation deck; a nightclub is waiting to welcome you on the 144th floor and a mosque is to be found on the 158th floor.

The building was designed and constructed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill of Chicago, with Adrian Smith as the chief architect and Bill Baker the chief structural engineer. The tower opened in 2009 and cost $1.5 billion. Dubai ran into debt during the world crisis and was bailed out by the UAE President Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Hence, the tower was named in his honor instead of Burj Dubai as originally intended.

Tip:
Best reserve tickets online minimum 1-2 days in advance to jump the queue. There are several ticket options offered; with choosing the 2nd highest platform option you can save some serious money.
