The Museo de Arte Virreinal de Santa Teresa is an exclusive art gallery located in a beautifully preserved complex that houses hundreds of valuable pieces of art, including paintings, sculptures, metal works, ceramics and local archeological artifacts. Twelve thematically-arranged rooms hold Araquipa's cultural treasures. The three-hundred-year-old monastery of Santa Terresa, which houses the museum, contrasts with the modern features of the museum such as video displays. Some of the rooms remain in the original style of the monastery, creating a stunning backdrop for the exhibits.

2) Instituto Cultural Peruano Norteamericano (must see)

Instituto Cultural Peruano Norteamericano is a cultural center popular with both locals and tourists. The center's Cultural Library has more than ten thousand volumes, including classical and contemporary titles, periodicals, and illustrated children's books. The Institute's large collection of Peruvian and other American artists of the 20th and 21st centuries is displayed in the Art Gallery. The Institute often organizes traditional music and dance concerts.

Vibrant and colorful Peruvian art can be found at the Chavez de la Rosa Cultural Complex located in the Ichiberry House. The complex belongs to the National University of San Agustín of Arequipa. Here you can learn about the city's grand colonial past. The cultural complex exhibits traditional and contemporary paintings, sculptures and photography. Part of the cultural complex, the fascinating 18th-century Casa Arrospide Mansion, or “Talking Mansion”, is so-called because of the numerous old inscriptions on its walls.

Goyeneche House

4) Goyeneche House

Goyeneche Palace or Casa Goyeneche is a 17th century manorial house. It attracts tourists interested in observing colonial architecture in Peru.

The house looks much the same as other manorial houses of those times. It has ample patios, arched ceilings, doors and windows in typical colonial baroque style as well as a balcony. In the eighteenth century the building was acquired by the Goyeneche family from northern Spain. The façade shows the shield of Jose Sebastian de Goyeneche, bishop of Arequipa and later archbishop of Lima. Nowadays it hosts the Banco Central de Reserva branch offices in Arequipa.

Situated just a few minutes walking distance from Piaza de Armas, the Archaeological Museum of the UNSA (National University of San Agustin) attracts visitors with its fascinating collections of archeological objects. The items on display have been found by university-sponsored archeological excavations conducted over the last 35 years. Inca textiles, ceramic pieces from the Inca and Huari, pottery, Pre-Columbian stone and metal objects, Mantos mosaics and the skeletal remains of Inca human sacrifice subjects, as well as valuable gold and silver jewelry are all beautifully displayed in this museum.
