1) Pre-Columbian Art Museum (must see)

The Museo de Arte Precolombino is an art museum in Cusco dedicated to the display of archaeological artifacts and examples of pre-Columbian artworks drawn from all regions of pre-Columbian Peru. It is situated on Plaza Nazarenas in Cusco's San Blas district, and has on permanent display exhibitions of some 450 individual representative artifacts that are drawn from the wider collection of its parent museum, the Larco Museum in the Peruvian capital Lima.

The works of art displayed at the museum, encompass a period of time ranging between 1250 BC and AD 1532. There are a total of ten galleries: Formative, Nasca, Mochica, Huari, Chancay – Chimu, Inca, Wood, Jewelry and Stone, Silver, and Gold and Metals.

The Formative Gallery houses pieces from many diverse cultures. Among these are Cupisnique, Salinar, Vicus, Viru and Paracas in its older phase or “cavernas”. The Inca culture conquered all the territory of pre-Columbian Peru where they restored with great political ability the Tahuantinsuyo empire. In the Inca Gallery magnificent ceramic objects are showcased like the emblematic aribalos or monumental vessels.

The Contemporary Art Museum

2) The Contemporary Art Museum

The Contemporary Art Museum has a large collection of modern paintings, which it exhibits on two floors of the Cusco Town Hall. The museum was founded by the head of the municipality of Cusco, Daniel Estrada. In addition to the two floors displaying paintings and other handicrafts, the top floor of the museum houses the creations of such renowned local artists as Edilberto Mérida, Antonio Olave and Hilario Mendívil.

3) Cusco Regional History Museum

One of the most attractive museums in the city, The History Museum of Cusco is located in the former house of the famous local writer Garcilazo de la Vega. The museum is centrally located just a few blocks away from the city’s central plaza. Inside, the museum has preserved the building's decorative features and has on display a permanent collection of paintings of the Academy of Cusco, in addition to wooden sculptures and archeological pieces. These archeological artifacts include Inca pottery, agricultural tools, textiles and musical instruments.

The Popular Art Museum of The American Art Institute was founded in 1937 and exhibits wooden carvings of saints, local handicrafts, carved stones and a large collection of masks and dolls. Several rooms of the museum are dedicated to contemporary paintings and photography.
