The Alley Kat Bar & Lounge (ex Mink)

1) The Alley Kat Bar & Lounge (ex Mink)

Formerly known as the Mink, with its sign still hanging outside, the Alley Kat Bar & Lounge features a hip speakeasy style experience that attracts a fresh crowd of hipsters from around Houston. Rick wood elements and antique wallpaper set a sophisticated tone for this hip lounge, featuring a range of premium beer selections, as well as a great assortment of tasty cocktails including classics and original recipes. Music includes smooth jazz and blues tunes to set a casual tone, which is backed up by the permissive dress code, though some guests dress up as well. The Alley Kat Bar & Lounge can get quite packed, especially on the weekends, and includes a small dance floor as well.

Operation Hours: Monday – Thursday: 4 pm – 12 am; Friday - Saturday: 4 pm – 2 am
Continental Club

2) Continental Club

The original Continental Club opened in Austin, Texas, in 1957. The Houston branch opened in July 2000, and is an authentic recreation of the original, from the neon sign outside to the red velvet stage. The musical offerings are diverse, but the focus is American roots, rockabilly, and country, featuring local bands. The club also has a good bar and a pleasant patio where you can take in some fresh air.

Operation Hours: Monday: 7 pm – 2 am; Wednesday: 8 pm – 2 am; Thursday – Friday: 7 pm – 2 am; Saturday: 8 pm – 2 am

3) Numbers

Never seeming to cater to the latest trends, Numbers remains a Houston institution after many years in business. Featuring a no-frills evening of partying to both live bands and amazing DJs, Numbers keeps the party going all night long on its rather generous dance floor that invites and eighteen and older crowd to its steamy environs each night. A host of alternative sounds from yesterday and today play on their large video screen when live bands, including such former artists as The Cure, Snoop Dogg, and the Black Keys, are not onstage. This casual laid back party place does not enforce a dress code and also features great drink prices and a spacious outdoor patio where guests can relax from the dance floor.

Operation Hours: Wednesday - Saturday: 9 pm — 2 am
Meteor Lounge

4) Meteor Lounge

The Meteor is a trendy upscale lounge with a very hip atmosphere. It offers lots of seating, video screens, great music, and amazing drinks (including a half-price happy hour). The entertainment sometimes includes go-go boys or strippers. The lounge also has a patio where you can escape from the music and noise or just chill with friends.

5) Ripcord

Ripcord is a very popular gay leather bar that also houses a leather shop. It offers great music and a wide variety of reasonably priced drinks, and is open after-hours until 4 AM on Fridays and Saturdays. The staff is very friendly and efficient. Ripcord also organizes many special events and evenings. The place opened more than twenty years ago and is still very popular.
Montrose Mining Company

6) Montrose Mining Company

Montrose Mining Company is a nightclub that is very popular with the leather and Levi’s crowd. The bar is dark and a bit "divey," but that is part of the fun. They offer a happy hour, low priced drink specials, and dancers on Fridays and Saturdays. They have an amazing dance floor and a very pleasant patio.
South Beach Nightclub

7) South Beach Nightclub

A high-end nightlife establishment catering to Houston’s gay community, South Beach is inspired by posh Miami dance clubs and delivers a thrilling evening to its guests each night. Its impressive, sate-of-the-art sound system is complemented by high-tech laser lights displays and a unique system that emits liquid-cooled air through jets throughout the space that can significantly lower the club’s temperature and cool off sweaty dancers. Go-go boys also keep South Beach’s lively crowd entertained, getting down to hot top 40 sounds and electronic dance music. This club includes a generous dance floor, spacious outdoor patio, and a full service bar with a good wine list as well.

Operation Hours: Thursday: 9 pm – 2 am; Friday – Saturday: 9 pm – 4 am

8) Davenport

Incorporating elements of a casual dive bar with a sophisticated touch to its extensive range of cocktails and liquor selection, the Davenport attracts a friendly crowd of twenty- and thirty-somethings looking for a trendy night out in Houston while being served some of the best drinks the city has to offer. Its trained mixologists can mix up any drink a guest desires, or recommend one of the Davenport’s many signature creations, including a Peanut Butter and Jelly Martini, and even the unique Twinkie-tini. Ambient music is piped in to set a cool tone for this hip and cozy bar. Although no food is served, a gourmet food truck is sometimes parked right outside.

Operation Hours: Monday – Sunday: 2 pm – 2 am
Lumen Lounge

9) Lumen Lounge

A smaller space catering to an upscale crowd, the Lumen Lounge is an intimate nightlife establishment where guests can go for outstanding VIP treatment, right down to the red velvet ropes outside the club’s entrance. Found on Kirby in the West University area of Houston, Lumen Lounge offers a good mix of beats served up by local DJs each night. Guests can expect to hear the best top 40 sounds, Latin beats, electronic dance music, and hip hop. As this modest-sized lounge can get easily packed, especially on the weekends, the door staff does enforce a dress code to ensure its partiers are all well-dressed for the evening.

Operation Hours: Tuesday: 12 pm – 2 am; Friday: 12 pm – 2 am; Saturday: 10 pm – 12 am

Tips for Exploring City on Foot at Your Own Pace

Whether you are in Houston for a quick stopover or have a few days to see the city in more detail, exploring it on foot, at your own pace, is definitely the way to go. Here are some tips for you to save money, see the best Houston has to offer, take good care of your feet while walking, and keep your mobile device – your ultimate "work horse" on this trip - well fed and safe.

Taking Care of Your Feet

To ensure ultimate satisfaction from a day of walking around the city as big as Houston, it is imperative to take good care of your feet so as to avoid unpleasant things like blisters, cold or overheated soles, itchy, irritated or otherwise damaged (cracked) skin, etc. Luckily, these days there is no shortage of remedies to address (and, ideally, to prevent) these and other potential problems with feet. Among them: Compression Socks, Rechargeable Battery-Powered Thermo Socks for Cold Weather, Foot Repair Cream, Deodorant Powder, Shoes UV Sterilizer, and many more that you may wish to find a place in your travel kit for.

Travel Gadgets for Your Mobile Device

Your mobile phone or tablet will be your work horse on a self-guided walk. They offer tour map, guide you from one attraction to another, and provide informative background for the sights you wish to visit. Therefore it is absolutely essential to plan against unexpected power outages in the wrong place at the wrong time, much as to ensure the safety of your device.

For these and other contingencies, here's the list of useful appliances: Portable Charger/External Battery Pack, Worldwide Travel Charger Adapter, Power Converter for International Travel Adapter, and Mobile Device Leash.
