St. Thomas Anglican Church

1) St. Thomas Anglican Church (must see)

Built over a hundred years ago, St. Thomas Church is housed in a beautiful, old stone building. The original church was constructed in 1864 and used to be important to Christians living in the Berea District. In 1890 the church had to be moved to a more central location. It is now a beautiful Victorian church built in the Gothic Revival style. Some of its outstanding features include an amazing wooden ceiling and stained glass windows, as well as the church organ.

Holy Trinity Catholic Church

2) Holy Trinity Catholic Church

Holy Trinity Catholic Church, located opposite St. Thomas Church, is situated in a stone building with a large and intricate mosaic adorning the outer wall above the main entrance. The church combines old and new architectural styles. Sunday services are performed at 8:00 AM, 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM; weekday services start at 5:30 PM.

Saint Anthony's Catholic Church

3) Saint Anthony's Catholic Church

Located opposite ML Sultan Technikon, Saint Anthony's Catholic Church is a beautiful church with Spanish influences evident in its architecture and interior design. It was founded in 1936 with the purpose of accommodating Durban's growing Catholic Indian population. Sunday services begin at 8:15 and 10:00 in the morning.

West Street Mosque

4) West Street Mosque (must see)

Situated on Dr. Pixley Kaseme Street, West Street Mosque has become a Durban landmark, as its tower stands out prominently between two buildings. The mosque is a beautiful Edwardian interpretation of Islamic architecture. The walls of the building are painted a refreshing green color. It is one of the oldest architectural sites in Durban. Tourists are welcome; however, they are asked to leave their shoes at the entrance of the mosque.

Emmanuel Cathedral

5) Emmanuel Cathedral (must see)

Designed by well-known Durban architect Street Wilson, Emmanuel Cathedral is located on Cathedral Road. Construction of the building was completed in 1904. Emmanuel Cathedral is a famous Durban landmark. It is a magnificent building with splendid architectural features. The cathedral's cross was a gift given by the wife of Napoleon III to Emmanuel Cathedral.

Juma Musjid Mosque

6) Juma Musjid Mosque

Built in the late 1800s, Juma Musjid Mosque was the first mosque built in the Natal region. In 1904 two minarets on Dr.Yusuf Dadoo Street were added to the building. However, the church was rebuilt in 1927 by Payne and Payne. The mosque is a beautiful blend of Islamic decorative elements and the Vernacular architectural style.

St. Paul's Church

7) St. Paul's Church

Situated opposite the Durban Main Post Office, St. Paul's Church is a beautiful Gothic Revival Edwardian church. The church was originally constructed in 1853, but after a huge fire in 1906 it was completely rebuilt. St Paul's Church features a large splendid nave, wood ceiling, wonderful stained glass windows and commemorative plaques memorializing some of Durban's early settlers.

Regardless of your faith, the Hindu Temple, dedicated to Lord Ganesha, is an interesting structure well worth visiting. This picturesque mosque, founded in 1901, features the elegance of North Indian architecture blended with Victorian and Islamic influences. Before entering the temple visitors are required to leave their shoes at the entrance. It is best to visit the temple in the morning, since this is when most people come to worship.
