Miami's Celebrity Homes Walking Tour (Self Guided), Miami

Environmentalists may worry about rising sea levels threatening to subsume Miami Beach someday, but that doesn't stop North Bay Road, a.k.a. Millionaire's Row, nestled in the heart of Miami Beach, from housing some of the hottest real estate on the planet. And the secret for that is out, says Christian de Berdouare, a chicken restaurant magnate and a longtime resident on the upper part of the street: “North Bay Road is probably the best street in all of Miami Beach. I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.”

A good number of the rich and famous reside on the La Gorce Island which is also part of the area, and was built in 1924. Named in honor Dr. John Oliver LaGorce, President of the National Geographic Magazine Company, this island was purchased in 1936 by LaGorce Island, Inc. In 1946, the newly-formed LaGorce Island Association, Inc. assumed full responsibility of the landscaping, building and maintenance of local parkways, eventually transforming LaGorce into an elite residential and tropical oasis, home to many of Miami Beach's largest, most prestigious homes.

If you wish to see the dwellings of some of the most popular celebrity residents of Miami – athletes, musicians, actors, etc., follow this self-guided walk.

Floyd Mayweather Residence

1) Floyd Mayweather Residence

The retired boxing champ and richest boxer of all-time (whose net worth is currently estimated at around $1 billion), Floyd Mayweather Jr. is one of the many athletes who opted to have a home in Miami, precisely in the golfing community of La Gorce.

Unlike the rest of the celebrity homes around here, Mayweather's house is not Mediterranean or villa inspired, but is a rather ultramodern dwelling, liberal in its use of white concrete surfaces, steel, and glass. It is also relatively small, compared to the neighboring properties, measuring only 5,200 square feet, with five bedrooms and five bathrooms in it, and an infinity pool. There's also a dock in the backyard that can accommodate a sports yacht, which is otherwise referred to as a "Zen retreat on the water," because "Zen" is the first thing Mayweather has in mind when buying a home.

For this glitzy abode, the pugilist, known for flaunting his cash much as for beating his opponents in the ring, has dropped $7.7 million worth of cold, hard cash.

Christian De Berdouare Residence

2) Christian De Berdouare Residence

Christian de Berdouare, owner of the restaurant franchise Chicken Kitchen, is also known for owning multiple properties on North Bay Road since 1997, when he and his wife, TV journalist Jennifer Valoppi, purchased their first home in this area. In 2014, De Berdouare made headlines as he bought "The Pink House" mansion, further down the road, that used to belong to the Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar. Eventually, he tore that property down to build another spec house.

The latest addition to De Berdouare's collection of homes on North Bay Road is a newly built 17,055-square-foot waterfront mansion, called “Bakara Sesto Senso.” This resort-style residence was designed, based on De Berdouare's own ideas, by architect Zeb Jarosz who is famous for creating homes for Dan Marino, a former NFL player for the Miami Dolphins, Michael Jordan, a former NBA player for the Chicago Bulls, and Hollywood star Matt Damon.

Among the home’s features are seven bedrooms and ten bathrooms, two kitchens, two pools, an open atrium with a vertical garden, a private movie theater with seating for eight people, a wine room and a private gym. The master suite has a 9x5-foot bathtub carved out of a single slab of Carrara Statuario marble, which weighs more than 6,000 pounds and required special structural engineering of the entire building. The home also has a six-car garage. In addition to its marble-rich interiors and glamorous custom-built Italian furnishings, the property boasts a nearly 3,500-square-foot third floor rooftop deck with infinity-edge swimming pool affording terrific sunset views over Biscayne Bay.

Ricky Martin Residence

3) Ricky Martin Residence

Among the pop stars who have blessed La Gorce with their residency is Latin singer/songwriter Ricky Martin. He lived here for a while in a Mediterranean-design home which was originally built for the Bohn family of Detroit, of Bohn Bronze & Brass fortune, for whom "significant bronze detailing and decorative metalwork was installed throughout". The house was completed in 1937 by architects Carlos Schoeppl and George Maguelo, and is extensively described in the book “Miami Beach: Blueprint of an Eden”. By the time Martin bought it, much of the original bronze work, such as the front drive and loggia gates, was gone, but the other elements, like the stair rail and exterior lanterns, still remain.

The residence comes with seven bedrooms and eight bathrooms, an outdoor pool and Jacuzzi, a gourmet kitchen and formal dining room, and has its own dock. It also boasts of vaulted ceilings, marble floors and marble staircase, solid mahogany doors, and other luxurious features. The house retains practically all of its historic beauty and grandeur. Martin, who loves Miami and has one more home overlooking the ocean in Golden Beach, sold the La Gorce place in 2005 for $10.6 million.

Jennifer Lopez / Phil Collins Residence

4) Jennifer Lopez / Phil Collins Residence

Neighboring Matt Damon's in this prestigious island community, noted for its contemporary European-style architecture and design, is an extensively renovated 1929 villa with vaulted ceilings, seven bedrooms, eight bathrooms, a formal dining room, exotic gardens, and even koi ponds! This is the former home of pop singer/actress Jennifer Lopez. Eventually, after JLo sold her property to healthcare executive Mark Gainor and his wife, Elyse, in 2005, this sophisticated North Bay Road manse was snapped up by another celebrity, Phil Collins.

The award-winning singer/songwriter and former front-man of the British rock band Genesis, widely successful during the 1980s-90s, Collins is also well-known for composing songs for various Disney productions. All of this left him wealthy enough to part graciously with a hefty $33 million to purchase Jennifer Lopez’s old place. The musician is said to have comfortably settled in his new 200-foot bay-front Miami Beach home which, in addition to other amenities, has its own swimming pool and a boat dock, and is definitely fit to make the singer croon to his own number “Another Day in Paradise”!

5
Barry Gibb Residence

5) Barry Gibb Residence

The last man standing of the legendary pop group Bee Gees, Barry Gibbs has been the proud owner of a Miami Beach home since 1981. Located in the La Gorce Country Club, they say, they don't get much bigger and better than this 16,341-square-foot mansion, which Gibb shares with his wife Linda; and definitely not cheaper – back then, he bought it for a mere $1,587,313.

The purchase came after the supergroup's peak success when Barry was producing music for brother Andy's solo career, as well as producing and collaborating hit songs with Barbra Streisand. Known for the smash hits like Staying Alive, More than a Woman, How Deep is Your Love, and their Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, the Bee Gees were one of the most influential acts of their time, having sold, over the years, a staggering 220 million records worldwide.

Currently appraised at over $30 million, the home comes with nine bedrooms, ten bathrooms, and three half bathrooms, as well as other amenities like basketball and tennis courts. As of lately, there have been a number of properties offered for sale at La Gorce, so if you have a few million to spare and want to live near the famous musician, consider making the investment.

Dwyane Wade/ Gabrielle Union Residence

6) Dwyane Wade/ Gabrielle Union Residence

If you crave a lifestyle resembling 24/7 vacation at a private beach resort, you can give it a try buying something similar to this insanely gorgeous Miami Beach property owned by Dwyane Wade, a retired NBA star, and his actress wife Gabrielle Union. The celebrity couple recently saw the price on their Mediterranean-style home drop from $32.5 million to a moderate $29 million, so you might get a chance!

The mansion is quite huge, with a 14,000 square foot floor area, and has eight bedrooms, nine bathrooms, and a guesthouse. Aside from boasting sunset views from every room, a pool overlooking Biscayne Bay, an outdoor kitchen and a bar area, plus plenty of poolside cabanas to sit in and soak up that bright Florida sunshine, the property also has its own tennis court and access to the water via its own waterway frontage and dock. The popular athlete, who spent most of his basketball career playing for the Miami Heat, has owned this place since 2010, so no wonder it has, on top of all its amenities, an in-house basketball court, too!

Inside, the main house abounds in rich accents and classic details. The chef's kitchen features dark wood cabinets, while the dining room has massive windows which add a great deal of picturesque view to the setting. In addition to that, there are plenty of formal and informal living areas to entertain family and guests.

Matt Damon's Residence

7) Matt Damon's Residence

One of the top stars in Hollywood, the award winning actor, producer and screenwriter Matt Damon, famous for his roles in the movies like Good Will Hunting, the Bourne trilogy, and The Martian, made the quiet golf locale of La Gorce his home for several years. In April 2005, Damon bought a 43,000-square-foot historic Mediterranean Revival mansion here, called Maravilla, for a combined price of $14.5 million.

Complete with the unobstructed 170 feet of spectacular waterfront panorama of the Biscayne Bay, this “rare jewel” of a property features a 9,500-square-foot residence with seven bedrooms and ten bathrooms, a gourmet kitchen, stacked wine cellar, home theater, private terrace off the master suite, roof terrace and its own swimming pool, plus a two-bedroom guesthouse. In 2014, Matt Damon, often snapped by paparazzi out on the Miami waters, decided to part with his double-lot estate which had come down in price over the years. Eventually, he succeeded in selling it for $15.375 million, which although way below the originally asked $20 million, was still enough to bring him a handsome $875,000 profit.

Lil Wayne Residence

8) Lil Wayne Residence

Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., the young money millionaire rapper, commonly known as Lil Wayne, is yet another musician who, at some point, decided to settle in the peaceful yet opulent North Beach neighborhood of La Gorce. His home is sitting on a smaller island somewhat north of the Golf Course, which is more private than the rest in the area, and can only be reached via the road, called Pine Tree Lane.

Tucked behind tall hedges, the 15,100-square-foot residence features ultramodern glass-marble-steel design, with a three-story wall of windows in the living room taking in waterway views, nine bedrooms, including a two-story master suite accessed by a glass-enclosed elevator, ten bathrooms, multiple kitchens, a media room and a professional recording studio, plus a set of unusual amenities, such as a rooftop skate park and a shark lagoon. In addition to that, on a 20,900-square-foot lot you can find a three-bedroom guesthouse, terraces and decking creating additional living space outdoors, plus 120 feet of bay frontage, a private dock situated just beyond the swimming pool, and a three-car garage.

Despite all these conveniences, the hip hop artist left everyone head-scratching in 2017 when he opted to sell his gorgeous waterfront manse for a deeply discounted $10 million, way below the original asking price of $18 million.

Billy Joel Residence

9) Billy Joel Residence

A musical legend Billy Joel, a songwriter, composer, and pianist, best-known for his hits like Uptown Girl, Just the Way You Are, and Piano Man, once called North Beach, Florida his home, despite being in a “New York state of mind.”

The singer's 8,880-square-foot Mediterranean Revival mansion in Miami is located on a .67-acre slice of waterfront on the swanky, celeb-studded La Gorce island, north of the Golf Course, and is replete with opulent amenities. Among them are seven bedrooms and eight bathrooms, a gourmet chef's kitchen, luxurious bar with a wine cellar, formal living and dining room, office and sumptuous master suite showcasing the finest details and finishes, plus an outdoor summer kitchen, tropical landscaping and expansive open areas with breathtaking views of the bay. As a must have in Miami, the home boasts 165 feet of water frontage with a room for a yacht!

Joel bought this property in 2006 for $13.5 million only to sell it, in 2013, for just under $14 million.

Address: 82 La Gorce Circle, La Gorce Island, North Beach Miami, FL 33141
10
Cher's Residence

10) Cher's Residence

Among the rich and famous who once called the La Gorce Island their home was the pop diva/actress Cher. An ardent lover of Miami, she spent several years here living it up superstar style in her six-bedroom/seven-bathroom La Gorce abode which she bought in 2003 for an undisclosed amount.

Cher worked magic on this 1950s property turning it into a grand 11,460 square foot villa to reflect her evolving taste, featuring balconies, covered terraces, courtyards and amazing fountains. Inspired by Venetian and Moorish design, her Miami Beach palace was filled with religious art, richly hued fabrics, carved woods, scrolled ironwork and stone. Inside, the house has a gourmet kitchen, formal dining room, and a two-story living room.

The entire estate measures 29,507 square feet and, after due renovation, comprised a gym, pool and spa with a waterfall, a wine cellar, man-made private beach and tropical landscaped gardens. A keen swimmer as she is, Cher also had, on top of all amenities, a heated lap pool and a private dock out onto the water with a very wide bay view. In a house like this, there is hardly any need to turn back time! Still, in 2006 the singer chose to offload the property, fully furnished, for a cute $8.8 million.
