1) National Gallery of Modern Art

The National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) is the leading Indian art gallery. The main museum at Jaipur House in New Delhi was established on March 29, 1954 by the Government of India, with subsequent branches at Mumbai and Bangalore. Its collection of more than 14,000 works includes artists such as Thomas Daniell, Raja Ravi Verma, Abanindranath Tagore, Rabindranath Tagore, Gaganendranath Tagore, Nandalal Bose, Jamini Roy, Amrita Sher-Gil as well as foreign artists, apart from sculptures by various artists. Some of the oldest works preserved here date back to 1857. The finest painting collection, spiritual sculptures, contemporary artworks of the Indian leading artists, treasure of numerous publications, films on artists' awards are reserved here. Galleries, displaying the important collection of artistic objects, are developed constantly and aesthetic art-shows are organized.

Crafts Museum

2) Crafts Museum (must see)

Antique and folk objects, splendid handicrafts, traditional items of Indian art, textiles and folk are gathered at this popular museum. Among the various exhibits: chandeliers, paintings, pots, jewelry, aristocratic items, bamboo products, dolls, wood carvings, bronze, and decorated metal items. Unique collected objects revealing ethnic culture are displayed in the modern building.

3) Shankar International Dolls Museum

The International Dolls Museum is a large collection of dolls in Delhi. It was set up by K. Shankar Pillai, a political cartoonist. This superb musem holds an unique collection of beautiful dolls dressed in folk costumes in accordance with the represented country. Folktales books about the Indian culture and traditions are also available. Fascinating displays on mythologies attract thousands of children and delegations from various countries.

National Gandhi Museum (Gandhi Memorial Museum)

4) National Gandhi Museum (Gandhi Memorial Museum) (must see)

The National Gandhi Museum or Gandhi Memorial Museum is a museum located in New Delhi showcasing the life and principles of Mahatma Gandhi. The museum first opened in Mumbai, shortly after Gandhi was assassinated in 1948. The museum relocated several times before moving to Rajghat, New Delhi in 1961.

The Gandhi Museum's library is both a showcase for Gandhi's work and a general studies library. The National Gandhi Museum Gallery has a large number of paintings and personal items of Mahatma Gandhi. The most notable items in the collection are a Satyagraha woodcut by Willemia Muller Ogterop, one of Gandhi's walking sticks, the shawl and dhoti worn by Gandhi when he was assassinated, one of the bullets that were used to kill Gandhi and his urn.

Swatantrata Sangram Sanghrahalya

5) Swatantrata Sangram Sanghrahalya

Swatantrata Sangram Sanghrahalya also known as the museum of Independence movement is located within the premises of Red Fort, New Delhi. If you enter the fort through the Lahore gate, you can reach this museum with ease. The museum represents significant features of Indian Independence movement such as the Sepoy Mutiny in 1857, the first battle of independence and Quit India Movement.

The Red Fort was occupied by the British Army after the Mughal rule. You will learn all significant details about this important piece of history here. In the Sanghrahalya, you will find a vivid depiction of freedom struggle through paintings, documents, photographs and lithographs. Also on display are guns, swords and pistols used during the struggle. Medals, shields, sculptures and dioramas are other important objects to be seen at this museum. The museum provides you with a clear idea of how the Indian freedom fighters gained confidence and opposed the mighty British army. You will be inspired by the pictures of great freedom movement leaders.

The museum is open between 9 Am and 5 PM on all days except Monday. The entry fee is included in the Red Fort fee of Rs. 11 for Indians and Rs.100 for foreigners.
