1) Asti

This dive bar, located in downtown Santa Cruz, is known as the punk's hangout. Still, anyone can come here as long as they don't mind the cigarette smoke, because this is one of a few dive bars that allows smoking. The bartenders are very nice, the music is pretty good and it's the place where punks like to hang out. Inside the bar, you'll find a jukebox, a good selection of cheap drinks, pool tables in the back and booths and bar stools behind the bar. If you are in a good mood for a solid dive bar, this can be the perfect place.
Kuumbwa Jazz Center

2) Kuumbwa Jazz Center

The Kuumbwa Jazz Center, located in Central California, is perhaps the best jazz club with a real intimate atmosphere that books awesome performers and is recognized in the international arts community for its concerts. Ii is a great place to have a bowl of chili before show starts, or to drink marvelous Central Coast wines and cheap beers. The acoustics are impeccable, the staff is friendly and the seats are great, unless you choose to stand in the back and dance. This venue gives you a chance to see amazing jazz in a cozy atmosphere. If you are looking for a different night out, check out shows at Kuumbwa Jazz Center!
The Catalyst

3) The Catalyst

The Catalyst is known as a music venue, but most people from Santa Cruz know it is much more than that. Upstairs is a dive bar with six pool tables, a jukebox and a few arcade games. The dance hall consists of 5000 square feet and can hold about 800 people. The upstairs smoke-filled lounge is not for the weak ones, but the cheap drinks and numerous pool tables make it a good late-night option. During a certain period of time, many artists gave concerts, artists such as Ice T, Nirvana, Alanis Morissette, No Doubt, Red Hot Chili Peppers and others.
Blue Lagoon Cocktail Lounge

4) Blue Lagoon Cocktail Lounge

The Blue Lagoon is often summed up as - sexually ambiguous. It is a great place to hang out downtown, and even though the bar has gay clientele, they are open and friendly to all. You can enjoy a funky, eclectic crowd, cheap drinks, quick friendly bartenders and on the plus side, they play decent music and hire local DJs. The bar has pool tables, an awesome fish tank and is the only one that has 2 dance floors every night. The Blue Lagoon has local charm as well as a local look and feel; it is worth checking it out.
Rosie McCann's

5) Rosie McCann's

Nowadays, the essential image of an Irish Pub is a place where people gather to share some good drinks and have fun. Rosie McCann's is a place where you hang out with your old friends and meet new ones, and it is remarkable because of its hospitality. Inside you'll find a wood bar, nicely styled and comfortable and a dance floor with a DJ; the atmosphere is friendly and the service is good. The bar has a wide selection of beers and liqueurs and if you want to go somewhere to see people, check out Rosie McCann's on Thursday nights.
99 Bottles of Beer

6) 99 Bottles of Beer

Be the first to know all about upcoming specials, music and beer tasting and drink all 99 beers (half of them on tap) and you will be forever remembered on the wall of fame. It's a great place to hang out outside in the sun under the umbrellas or inside in the wooden decor, watching TV tuned to a current sporting event of interest. Bartenders are always nice, can hold a conversation and make great recommendations. Check out Trivia night on Wednesdays and get ready for a really memorable and fun evening.
Red Room

7) Red Room

The popularity of Red Room is due to the good drinks, good ambiance and good people, and it seems to have a great structural atmosphere. Upstairs there are little booths for food or drink, red velvet couches and pillows, a two-sided fireplace for cold days and live music most of the time that gives a romantic touch. The bartenders are always friendly and prepare specialty drinks, and the jukebox selection is awesome. It's a nice place for large groups of friends to come and enjoy an evening.
Jury Room

8) Jury Room

The Jury Room is another great dive bar in downtown Santa Cruz and it gets its name from the County Courthouse, because it is right across the street from it. This is a great place to stop on your way home from the beach and have some nice drinks. The prices are affordable and they have a pool table, microwave oven, TVs that play movies, music and sports, and the jukebox has a lot of punk and metal music. The bartender is always nice, fun and pours a stiff drink at a cheap price. The Jury Room is a good place to relax and if you are into good drinks, free entertainment and good punk selection, it's never too late to visit.
Callahan's Pub

9) Callahan's Pub

Callahan's is the perfect place for bikers after going for a long motorcycle ride, and if you don't mind that or if that happens to be what you are looking for, you'll find it a fun place. Free pool tables, two dart boards, kind bartenders and low prices of drinks also make it a nice and fun pub. Callahan's was remodeled 2 years ago and now it is a classic neighborhood bar with the freshest and coldest beer in town.
