Tirana Mosaic

1) Tirana Mosaic

The Tirana Mosaic is a famous Albanian landmark that is thought to have been part of a Roman house built in the third century. Later in the fifth and sixth centuries, a church was built at this site. The ruins of this Paleo-Christian Basilica were discovered in 1972.

Today, the Byzantine church displays some of the ancient mosaics discovered at the site that feature diverse geometrical patterns and depict poultry and fish.It has been re-opened for public on 23 January 2010.

Mezuraj Museum

2) Mezuraj Museum

The Mezuraj Museum is located in the Sun Business Center and was named after the Mezuraj family. It displays a vast collection of various items that belonged to the Mezuraj family. Albanian paintings and sculptures are featured in two rooms. The museum also exhibits different archaeological finds such as jewelry and spearheads.

National History Museum

3) National History Museum (must see)

The National History Museum (Muzeu Historik Kombetar) in Tirana is Albania's largest museum. It was founded on October 28, 1981. Construction of the museum required the demolition of the former Tirana Municipal Building. The gigantic mosaic that appears at the main entrance to the museum is entitled 'The Albanians'. The National History Museum has rooms dedicated to the following: Antiquity, Medieval, Rilindja Kombetare, Iconography, Culture of Albania, Albanian Resistance in World War II, and Communist Genocide.

National Art Gallery

4) National Art Gallery (must see)

The National Art Gallery offers a great collection of artwork, dating from the thirteenth century to today. It is one of the few places where you can still find socialist-themed paintings. Women are typically the focus of these compositions.

Archaeological Museum

5) Archaeological Museum (must see)

National Archaeological Museum is a museum affiliated to Institute of Archaeology of the Academy of Sciences of Albania. The museum houses exhibits from prehistoric and historic times up to Middle Ages. It is also responsible for conducting many archaeological expeditions in the country and is the parent institution of several other museums in the country including the Durrës Archaeological Museum. It has a library of some 7200 volumes.
