Anton Scudier Central Park, Timisoara
Anton von Scudier Central Park is a sprawling urban park spanning over 9 hectares. Originally established in the 1860s-1870s by General Anton von Schudier, the park was built on the grounds of a former cemetery that had been relocated to Calea Lipovei. Initially designed as an English landscape park, it underwent a transformation between 2017 and 2019, taking on the aesthetic of Viennese gardens inspired by Schönbrunn Palace.
Renamed several times throughout history, the park was known as Stalin Park in the early 1950s before being rechristened Central Park in 1955. In 2015, it received its current name in honor of its founder, Anton von Schudier.
Central Park boasts various amenities, including fountains, a pavilion, chess tables, and a notable feature called the Alley of Personalities, adorned with statues of historical figures. Noteworthy among the park's monuments is the Monument of the Unknown Soldier, sculpted by Ion Vlad and unveiled in 1962. While originally intended to honor the "liberating Soviet soldier," interpretations suggest it may also represent a Romanian soldier, given the uniform similarities across Eastern Europe.
Having been established in 1880 by General Anton von Scudier, Central Park holds the distinction of being one of Timisoara's oldest parks. Its recent makeover in 2019 saw the introduction of new features such as drawn alleys, gazebos, a mosaic fortress map, and a miniature hedge maze. Moreover, visitors can enjoy impromptu piano performances in the park's pavilion during summer months, adding a touch of musical charm to this urban oasis.
