Asbury First Methodist Church, Rochester

Asbury First Methodist Church, Rochester

Asbury First United Methodist Church in Rochester is a vibrant and inclusive Christian community rooted in over 200 years of local ministry. Located on East Avenue within the city’s historic district, this progressive, Christ-centered church is known for its motto of “open hearts and open minds,” welcoming people from all walks of life. The current congregation was shaped by a 1934 merger of First Church and Asbury Methodist Episcopal Church, and with over 2,300 members, it stands today as the largest United Methodist church in the Rochester area.

The church is actively involved in both local and international outreach. Its Dining and Caring Center offers meals to those in need, while the Asbury First Storehouse supplies essential clothing and household goods. Additional ministries include the Grocery Bag Ministry, tutoring at School 41, interfaith housing support, and mission projects extending to India, Nicaragua, and Kenya. Beyond service, the church is a cultural hub, hosting an annual concert series that features both regional musicians and national performers.

Architecturally, the church’s campus reflects its rich history. The main sanctuary, completed in 1955 in American Gothic style, includes striking stained glass windows designed by George Haushalter and was guided by the vision of longtime minister Dr. Weldon Crossland. The adjoining education wing was added in 1961. Two historic mansions also grace the property: the Wilson Soule House at 1050 East Avenue, a prime example of Richardsonian Romanesque architecture and once home to George Eastman, now houses church offices; while 1010 East Avenue, built in Tudor style in 1907, serves as the Dining and Caring Center.

Whether through worship, service, or community, Asbury First invites all to “come as you are”-and promises to save you a seat.
