Asklepios Sanctuary, Paros
The Asklepios Sanctuary is an ancient temple dedicated to Asclepius, the revered god of medicine and healing in ancient Greek mythology. The origins of the temple can be traced back to around 300 BC, during a time when the cult of Asclepius gained popularity throughout Greece. These temples served as places of hope and healing for those who sought remedies for various ailments and injuries.
Devotees suffering from illnesses and injuries would gather in large numbers at the Asklepios Sanctuary, where they believed they could find a cure. One of the unique aspects of this cult was the practice of sleeping within the temple's precincts. It was believed that during the night, these pilgrims would have visions or dreams, which they would then report to the head priest the following day.
Based on the dreams and reports provided by the pilgrims, the therapist or head priest would prescribe a course of treatment. These treatments often involved therapeutic baths, mud cures, and physical exercises. The healing process was deeply intertwined with spiritual and psychological elements, making the Asklepios Sanctuary a holistic center for physical and mental well-being.
The remains of the Asklepios Sanctuary can still be observed today on the hill of Agia Anna, situated near Parikia. Although many centuries have passed since its heyday, some elements of the ancient site still stand. Notably, the remnants of the ancient wall and the central fountain basin remain as tangible evidence of the sanctuary's existence.
A long passage stretches from the sacred fountain to a circular construction where various types of cures and treatments were administered. This passage provides insight into the therapeutic rituals practiced at the sanctuary. Additionally, situated on a slightly elevated terrace above the Asklepieion, visitors can find the ruins of another sanctum, originally built to honor Pythian Apollo, further enriching the historical significance of this site.
