TC Energy Center, Houston

TC Energy Center, Houston

The TC Energy Center is a remarkable high-rise building that is a significant example of postmodern architecture. It was originally known as the RepublicBank Center, the NCNB Center, the NationsBank Center, and the Bank of America Center before being renamed in 2019. The tower was designed by the renowned architecture firm Johnson/Burgee Architects and was completed in October 1983. The building features three segmented tower setbacks, each with steeply pitched gabled rooflines that are topped with spires. The design of the building is reminiscent of the Dutch Gothic architecture of canal houses in The Netherlands.

The TC Energy Center has 56 stories and is the 95th tallest building in the United States and the seventh tallest building in Texas. The building was developed by Hines Interests and is currently owned by a joint venture of M-M Properties and an affiliate of the General Electric Pension Trust. The banking center is housed in a separate building due to construction problems, and it has a three-story lobby. There are 32 passenger elevators, each finished with wood panels that include Birdseye Maple, Macassar Ebony, Italian Willow, Tamo, and Kevazingo.

The building also features an art gallery in the lobby that plans to host curated exhibitions. The TC Energy Center serves as the US headquarters for TC Energy, which is the largest tenant in the building. The northeast corner of the structure houses a building within a building. The main Western Union building was on the site, and when relocation of the telegraph cables proved unfeasible, a new structure was built over the site, and the existing structure was incorporated into the new building intact.

The exterior of the building is constructed of red Swedish granite, giving it a dark pink appearance. The TC Energy Center is a remarkable example of postmodern architecture. Its design and features make it an impressive building that stands out in the city's skyline.

Historic Downtown Walking Tour

Clean, shiny, new, and impressive, Downtown Houston – a true metropolis – rises high above the dusty plains and swamplands of Texas. Just like the other major Texan city of Dallas, Houston has been described as a concrete jungle (or a spaghetti bowl) of endless freeways. Yet, it somehow manages to tower over the stream of engines, with a glittering uber-American presence. There is much to...  view more
