Bannerman Park, St. John`s
Bannerman Park is a historic urban park. Named after Sir Alexander Bannerman, it was established in 1864 as the first public park in the Dominion. Originally a botanical garden, it was expanded with additional land.
The park features skating rinks, including the Victoria Rink and the Avalon Curling and Skating Rink, which were later destroyed by fire. The park officially opened in 1891 after a design competition won by Johnny Burke, although the actual design was the work of William Harris. Bannerman Park has hosted various events and festivals, such as the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival, Peace-A-Chord, and the Tely 10 road race.
It also served as the setting for The Bannerman Quartet, an audio fiction series, and was featured in the historical walking tour Other Women Walk, highlighting the suffrage movement. Today, the park continues to be a cherished community space.
