Basel Synagogue, Basel
The Basel Synagogue, Switzerland's largest synagogue and a landmark of national significance is a centerpiece of the city's Israelite community. Renowned for its distinctive domes, it commands visibility throughout Basel and holds historical and architectural prominence. Designed by Hermann Gauss and constructed between 1866 and 1869, the synagogue was inspired by Stuttgart's synagogue and reflects a harmonious blend of neo-Byzantine, Moorish, and Romanesque styles. In 1892, Paul Reber led an extension that added a second dome and enriched its grandeur.
The façade, with its cream tones and horizontal red-and-cream brick striping, echoes Italian Renaissance design. Tri-lancet windows flank the entry, topped by a large round window, lending a serene symmetry to the structure. Over its 150-year history, the synagogue has undergone several expansions and restorations, notably in 1947, including updates to its exterior and a return to vibrant wall colors.
Inside the spacious prayer hall, sweeping ivory arches and columns support a pitched, wood-coffered ceiling. Stained-glass windows line the upper and lower stories, casting multicolored light across the elegant black-and-ivory diamond-patterned tiles. Flanking the Torah ark, white columns and gold-embroidered curtains emphasize the sacredness of the space, while a round stained-glass window above provides a celestial touch. Brass menorahs and intricately carved woodwork further enhance the atmosphere.
Beyond its architectural splendor, the Basel Synagogue serves as a vibrant hub for Jewish life. The complex includes a kosher restaurant, community center, mikvah, and school. It also supports youth clubs, sports teams, and social groups. A 16-member male choir enriches religious services and concerts with a repertoire of Jewish liturgical music.
The Basel Synagogue stands as both a spiritual haven and a testament to the enduring legacy of Jewish culture in Switzerland, blending historical reverence with modern community engagement.

Basel Introduction Walking Tour
The modern and bustling city of Basel gets its name from a third-century Roman castle that stood here. It is likely the modernization of "Villa Basilius," or "Estate of Basilius." Interestingly, the basilisk has been closely associated with the city and used in the coat of arms and coins. The association is likely simple assonance rather than anything more profound.

Basel's Historical Churches
Basel is the city of churches. Indeed, nowhere else in Switzerland will you find as many of them, both old and new, as here. Despite serious losses to the Reformation period, a good number of local temples have survived. Today, the vast majority of religious buildings, including the listed medieval Basel Minster, belong to the Evangelical Reformed Church.
