Basilica of Jesus the Adolescent, Nazareth
The Basilica of Jesus the Adolescent stands as one of the city's largest and most beautiful churches. Perched on the highest hill to the west of the city, this church is a prominent landmark visible from afar. Established in 1923, the basilica is built in the Neo-Romanesque style, drawing inspiration from the 12th century. The architecture features a spacious columns' yard, modeled after a church in France. Atop the church, a striking statue of Jesus the Adolescent commands attention.
The Basilica's grand interior, characterized by its expansive space, acoustics, and magnificent stained glass windows that create a vibrant play of lights, fosters a unique and holy atmosphere. The church is renowned for hosting liturgical concerts due to its exceptional acoustic qualities. Above the altar, a depiction of Jesus the Adolescent walking through the hills of Nazareth enhances the sacred ambiance.
The Salesian priests, dedicated to caring for orphaned children in Nazareth since the late 19th century, played a pivotal role in the church's history. Initially working in temporary structures sponsored by France and assisted by the French Embassy in Turkey, the Salesians established an impressive orphanage building in 1902, located adjacent to the Salesian Church on top of Nabi Sa'in ridge.
In 1905, the Salesian Church took shape, thanks to generous contributions, including a substantial donation from a French widow named Charlotte Di Schibbi, who wished to memorialize her husband, Louis Foache, a commander in the French Army. The couple was laid to rest in the church, with their names engraved in the memorial area. The church's design is credited to the French architect Lucia Gauthier, and the vibrant stained glass windows, displaying the colors of the French flag, were crafted in Versailles, France, underscoring the origins of the church's builders.
