Basilica of Our Lady of Suyapa, Tegucigalpa

The Basilica of Our Lady of Suyapa, known as the "Notre Dame of Suyapa," is an important religious site in Honduras. The origin of this basilica dates back to the 17th century when an image of the Virgin of Suyapa was discovered and venerated. A small chapel was built for this purpose in the village of Suyapa in 1780, near Tegucigalpa.

The Basilica of Suyapa features a modern style, painted entirely in white. Its design follows the Latin cross layout. The basilica is large enough to accommodate the many pilgrims who visit Suyapa. It measures 93 meters in length, 43 meters in height at its towers, and 46 meters at the dome. The dome has a diameter of 11.50 meters, and the central nave is 13.50 meters wide.

The façade has three main doors flanked by two bell towers. Inside, the central nave features pointed arches and a cylindrical ceiling supported by columns. The main altar, created by Valencian artist Francisco Hurtado-Soto, is located at the back of the nave under the dome. The beautiful stained glass windows depict scenes from the lives of the Virgin and Christ. The basilica can hold up to 10,000 people, making it the largest church in Central America.
