Any music enthusiast should make it a point to visit the Bate Collection of Musical Instruments, located within the Faculty of Music on Saint Aldate's. This impressive collection predominantly consists of Western classical musical instruments, spanning from medieval times to the present day. The museum is accessible to the general public and offers lending services for academic research.

The inception of this collection dates back to 1964 when Philip Bate, a well-known broadcaster, generously donated his assortment of musical instruments to the University for educational purposes. Subsequently, additional collections, such as those contributed by Anthony Baines and Jeremy Montague, both former Curators of the museum, were either lent or gifted.

Within the museum, visitors can marvel at the Roger Warner and Michael Thomas Keyboard Collections, which boast a remarkable array of early pianos, harpsichords, spinets, virginals, and clavichords. Furthermore, one can appreciate the Reginald Morley-Pegge Memorial Collection featuring horns and other brass and wood instruments. There is also the Edgar Hunt Collection, which houses recorders and other instruments, including the renowned Bressan treble-recorder.

Moreover, the museum hosts special exhibitions and various events. On Saturdays, families can partake in Family Friendly activities, including treasure hunts and the opportunity to experiment with instruments from the Handling Collection. Additionally, the museum offers workshops and recitals, making it a vibrant hub for music aficionados of all ages.
