Bethany Lutheran Church, Fredericksburg
Bethany Lutheran Church, also known as The Evangelical Protestant Church, has deep roots in the community of Fredericksburg. Established on March 27, 1887, under the leadership of Pastor J. Heinzelmann, the congregation adopted a new constitution and officially organized the church. Initially named the Evangelical-Catholic Church, it later became known as the Evangelical Church, embracing the original Augsburg Confession and Luther's small catechism.
Before the congregation constructed its own building, worship services were held in the Southern Methodist Church. The cornerstone for the new church building was laid on April 14, 1889. Placed within the cornerstone were significant items, including the church's history, political papers, copies of local newspapers such as the "Friederichsburger Wochenblatt," and various gold and silver coins. After months of construction, the church was dedicated on September 17, 1889.
The architecture of Bethany Lutheran Church reflects simplicity and elegance, characterized by simple Gothic design elements. The building measures 36 feet wide, 48 feet long, and 18 feet high to the ceiling, featuring a raised gallery and a distinctive 75-foot steeple adorned with two bells. Throughout its history, Bethany Lutheran Church has served as a spiritual and community hub for the residents of Fredericksburg, embodying the rich heritage and faith traditions of its founders.
