Bonlieu Scene Nationale, Annecy

Bonlieu Scene Nationale, Annecy

The Bonlieu National Scene (Bonlieu Scene Nationale) is a cornerstone of cultural life in Annecy, located in the heart of the city's Haute-Savoie department of the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes region. Overlooking Lake Annecy, adjacent to the scenic Paquier, and a short stroll from the town hall, old town, and train station, it is a vibrant hub that combines accessibility with artistic excellence.

This cultural complex stands on the historical grounds of a Cistercian convent that traces its roots to the Bonlieu hamlet in Sallenoves, where the Cistercian community originated in the 18th century. The name “Bonlieu” pays homage to this heritage while its modern identity reflects a commitment to fostering contemporary culture.

The idea for a state-of-the-art performance venue began in 1972 when the need for a modern cultural facility in Annecy was first recognized. The project gained traction after the election of a new mayor in 1975 and became a priority in the municipal mandate program by 1977. Designed by Haut-Savoyard architect Maurice Novarina, in collaboration with Jacques Lévy, construction commenced in 1978 and culminated in the center’s inauguration in 1981.

The Bonlieu National Scene boasts a striking architectural design, centered around a spacious circular hall with high ceilings. Two levels of balconies provide access to multiple rooms within the complex, including performance spaces, shops, and the city’s Tourist Office. The design ensures functionality and a sense of openness, making it a welcoming space for cultural and community activities.

Today, the Bonlieu National Scene is a vital part of Annecy's cultural fabric, hosting an array of performances and events that draw audiences from near and far.
