Brown Building, Wichita

Brown Building, Wichita

The Brown Building, originally constructed in 1926 as a six-story office structure for half a million dollars, it quickly outgrew its original footprint and, by 1928, five additional stories were added-bringing it to its current eleven-story height.

Designed by the Wichita firm Schmidt, Boucher & Overend and built under the direction of George Siedhoff, the building exemplifies Commercial Style architecture adorned with Classical Revival flourishes, such as Ionic columns, arched entrances, Carthage Bedford stone trim, brick, marble finishes, and ornamental rosettes.

Step inside the Brown Building’s storied interior and you'll discover that its lobby remains a pristine celebration of early 20th-century elegance. Rich materials-Carnegie Bedford stone, polished marble, molded plaster, and gleaming brass-define the space. Ascending past the lobby, many corridors showcase the original marble wainscoting, while some office levels still feature exposed concrete floors, ductwork, and ceiling beams.
