Buttermilk Falls State Park, Ithaca
Just a short drive southwest of Ithaca, Buttermilk Falls State Park is a natural retreat spanning 811 acres of rugged beauty. Named after its foamy, churning waters, the park’s centerpiece is the striking 165-foot Buttermilk Falls, which tumbles down a slanted rock face into a natural swimming pool. But this is just the beginning-nine other waterfalls, dramatic gorges, and lush woodlands make this one of the Finger Lakes region’s most popular outdoor destinations.
Established in 1924 with an initial 164-acre donation from Robert and Laura Treman, the park expanded through additional state acquisitions, growing into the vast scenic preserve it is today. The landscape’s Devonian shale and sandstone formations date back millions of years, while the gorge itself has been shaped over the past 20,000–30,000 years by the persistent flow of Buttermilk Creek.
The park’s trail network offers diverse hiking opportunities. The Gorge Trail, a favorite among visitors, follows Buttermilk Creek as it cascades nearly 600 feet through a series of waterfalls and pothole pools. The Rim Trail provides a different perspective from above, while the Bear Trail leads further upstream to Lake Treman. For a more relaxed stroll, the Larch Trail winds through the serene wetlands of Larch Meadows.
Beyond hiking, Buttermilk Falls State Park offers swimming, fishing, camping, deer bow-hunting, and picnic areas. Visitors can enjoy the beach, playground, pavilions, and playing fields, making it a great spot for both adventure and relaxation. Whether you’re here for the spectacular waterfall, the scenic hikes, or a peaceful afternoon by the lake, Buttermilk Falls State Park is a must-visit destination in New York’s Finger Lakes region.
