Café België (Café Belgium), Utrecht

Nestled along the iconic Oudegracht, Café Belgium (Café België) has been a cornerstone of Utrecht’s beer scene since 1984. With its no-nonsense atmosphere and an unparalleled selection of international beers-boasting 24 taps and over 200 bottled varieties-it is a haven for beer lovers, students, and locals alike. More than just a bar, Café Belgium is an institution, a meeting ground for connoisseurs and casual drinkers, all united by a shared appreciation for quality brews.

Café Belgium was inspired by co-founder Ronald de Koning’s volleyball trip to Belgium in the early 1980s, where he became fascinated by the country’s brewing tradition. Seeking a central Utrecht location, he and Bert de Ruiter opened the café on Oudegracht on March 17, 1984. It quickly became popular for its vast beer selection and lively basement parties. In 1987, de Ruiter expanded his beer ventures with Bert’s Bierhuis, a Belgian beer shop that later moved to Twijnstraat and grew further in 2013.

The building housing Café Belgium dates back to around 1900 and was first operated as Bakkerij Bijlard. It later housed office supply and paper wholesalers, then Rothschild & Keizer, a bicycle and electronics trader. By the late 20th century, it became a café space, home to Katapult, Ghouwe Gheyt (1982), and finally Café Belgium in 1984.

Today, Café Belgium stands as a beloved institution in Utrecht’s historic center. Whether you're a seasoned beer aficionado or a curious newcomer, a visit promises a taste of brewing excellence, a welcoming crowd, and a dive into the city’s beer heritage.
