Calle Sierpes (Sierpes Street), Seville

Calle Sierpes (Sierpes Street), Seville

Sierpes Street is one of Seville’s best-known pedestrian streets and a lively commercial artery in the heart of the historic centre. For centuries it has served as a gathering place for merchants, residents, and visitors moving between the city’s major squares and markets. The name “Sierpes” means “serpents,” and local legend claims that a giant serpent once lived beneath the street.
Since the late Middle Ages, Sierpes Street has been the centre of small business in Seville.

Blacksmiths, cobblers, and craftsmen of many trades once worked here, and the street gradually developed into one of the city’s busiest commercial corridors. Today it remains a long, gently curving pedestrian street lined with shops, cafés, and traditional stores. With no motor traffic allowed, visitors can wander freely among clothing boutiques, pastry shops, ceramic stores, and souvenir stalls.

On hot days, large awnings are stretched across the street to shade shoppers from the Andalusian sun. In the evenings, when temperatures cool, the atmosphere becomes livelier as street performers, musicians, and artists appear.

Sierpes Street also plays an important role during Holy Week . It forms part of the official procession route between Campana Square and San Francisco Square, when religious brotherhoods pass through the historic centre.
