Calvin Ecosystem Preserve & Native Gardens, Grand Rapids

Calvin Ecosystem Preserve & Native Gardens, Grand Rapids

Nestled on the campus of Calvin University in Grand Rapids, the Calvin Ecosystem Preserve & Native Gardens is a sanctuary of natural beauty and ecological learning. Established in 1985 on 35 acres of undeveloped land, the preserve has since expanded to 104 acres, featuring over a mile of walking trails, 44 acres of forests and wetlands, and an extensive native demonstration garden with more than 20 garden beds. It also includes the Buiten Wildlife Sanctuary, a 60-acre restricted research area dedicated to wildlife conservation.

The preserve’s mission is clear: to conserve, restore, and interpret native ecosystems, fostering appreciation for the natural world. Long-term ecological research, dating back to 1974, has guided its land management strategies, supporting over 300 plant species and 227 animal species-including three of special concern in Michigan: the Blanding’s turtle, Eastern box turtle, and Cooper’s hawk. With a Floristic Quality Index (FQI) score of 51.7, the preserve is recognized as an irreplaceable ecological site of state-wide significance.

Beyond conservation, the preserve serves as an educational hub, offering a range of public programs, summer camps, volunteer opportunities, and career panels in environmental sciences. Each May, a native plant sale encourages the community to engage in sustainable gardening. Calvin University students also gain hands-on experience in land management, environmental education, and scientific research.

Despite its vibrant research and educational initiatives, the preserve remains a peaceful retreat where visitors can connect with nature. Open daily from dawn to dusk, it invites exploration through its free-access trails. The Bunker Interpretive Center, a LEED-certified educational facility, enriches the experience with interactive exhibits and resources on West Michigan’s ecosystems.

Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a student, or simply looking for a quiet escape, the Calvin Ecosystem Preserve & Native Gardens offers a unique blend of biodiversity, conservation, and reflection.
