Canonical Archives and Presbytery, Pecs

The Canonical Archives and Presbytery in Pecs stand as a testament to the city's rich ecclesiastical heritage, housed in a neoclassical, late Baroque building originally constructed in 1784 based on the designs of the renowned architect Sartory. This structure, which plays a key role in the architectural ensemble surrounding Pecs Cathedral, was expanded in 1794 under the direction of Janos Krammer.

The archives, along with the library, are located on the ground floor, forming a scholarly hub within the building. Historically, the basement housed the crypt, storage rooms, and cellar, while the ground floor accommodated the flats of bell-ringers, chaplains, and the clerk, in addition to the kitchen. The archivist's study was also located here, reflecting the building’s dual function as both a residence and a repository of ecclesiastical records.

A multi-story passageway connects the archives directly to the Cathedral, ensuring a seamless architectural and functional link between the two structures. In 1800, the presbytery was formally integrated into the complex from the south, completing the construction phase. As part of the reorganization of the square in front of the Cathedral, the remnants of the eastern city wall and the southeast corner tower were demolished. During the Cathedral’s restoration, the clock was removed from its tower and placed in the pediment of the archives building, further cementing its significance within the religious precinct.

The Canonical Archives and Presbytery, together with the Cathedral and the Episcopal Palace, form a cohesive architectural unit, shaping the city’s historical core. One of its finest details is the wrought iron gate of the Episcopal crypt, an exquisite piece crafted in 1747 and relocated from the Cathedral’s sacristy, adding another layer of historical intrigue to this remarkable site.
