Carter Memorial Fountain, Ashland
The Carter Memorial Fountain, situated on Main Street East, stands as a poignant tribute to Henry and Harriet Carter, esteemed residents who made significant contributions to the community. Donated to the city by their family members, the fountain was dedicated in 1910 and has since become a cherished landmark within the Downtown Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Crafted by the renowned J. L. Mott Iron Works, the fountain features a majestic 12-foot pedestal adorned with a 5-foot 4-inch statue.
The fountain's design is both intricate and elegant, consisting of a double-tiered rectangular plinth adorned with decorative elements such as lion masks and acanthus motifs. At ground level, a large square base houses a small well for dogs on all four sides, symbolizing the fountain's accessibility to all members of the community. Surrounding the pedestal is a trough, adding to the fountain's functionality as a drinking fountain for both humans and animals.
Topping the structure is a striking statue representing a pioneer, affectionately known as "Iron Mike," holding a downward-facing flintlock rifle in one arm while shading his eyes with the other. This depiction embodies the spirit of early settlers and pays homage to Ashland's pioneering heritage. Despite its nickname, the statue is actually made of a zinc alloy, adding to its durability and longevity.
