Castillo de Montjuic (Montjuic Castle), Girona
Discover the evocative Montjuic Castle (Castillo de Montjuïc) perched at the summit of Montjuic Hill, reaching some 219 meters above the city. Built by order of Philip IV of Spain in 1653, its original mission was defensive: to secure Girona from northern approaches. The design featured a central square fortification flanked by four remote defensive towers-Sant Joan, Sant Daniel, Sant Narcís, and Sant Lluís-each positioned roughly 500 meters from the core structure.
Through the trials of history, the castle took on a dramatic role during the Peninsular War (1808–1814). It was besieged and ultimately captured by French forces in 1809 during Girona’s prolonged resistance. Later, Marshal Louis‑Gabriel Suchet ordered its deactivation and partial destruction in 1814, and further damage followed in 1843 during General Prim’s bombardment during the Catalan uprising “Jamància”.
Though its structure is now partially ruined, Montjuic Castle remains a compelling cultural landmark and a declared site of cultural interest. For visitors, the site offers not only a walk through Girona's turbulent past but also stunning views across the city and the surrounding landscapes. Restoration efforts celebrate its layered heritage, preserving what remains while commemorating the hill’s earlier identity, including its medieval Jewish cemetery, which gives the hill its name, “Mount of the Jews”.
Whether you're drawn by history, architecture, or simply the panorama, Montjuic Castle is an evocative stop for anyone exploring Girona’s rich mosaic of stories.

Girona Introduction Walking Tour
Girona sits in northeastern Catalonia, where every cobblestone seems to gossip about old allegiances and bitter defeats. Long before tourist maps and cafe terraces, Iberian tribes pitched up here in the 6th century BC. The Romans soon followed, stamping the place with the name Gerunda-“near the river”-a practical nod to the Onyar River, which still slices the city neatly into old and new.

Game of Thrones Film Sites in Girona
Let’s do a visualization exercise: Girona’s medieval quarter, with its stone staircases and cloistered courtyards, suddenly posing as Westeros. Between 2011 and 2019, HBO’s Game of Thrones roamed Europe in search of backdrops, and Girona ticked all the boxes-Romanesque towers, Gothic facades, and narrow alleys that looked like they’d been waiting centuries for a camera crew. The city... view more
