Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo, Seville

The Andalusian Center for Contemporary Art (CAAC) was established in February 1990 to serve as a hub for researching, preserving, and promoting contemporary art within the local community. It started building its permanent contemporary art collection shortly after. The center found its permanent home in a historic Carthusian monastery in 1997, marking a significant chapter in its history.

In 2018, the CAAC expanded by adding two new locations: the Centro de Creación Contemporánea de Andalucía in Córdoba and the 15th Century Pavilion, located on the grounds of the old charterhouse, primarily for storage and display of the collection.

Since its inception, the CAAC has focused on a broad range of activities to foster understanding of contemporary international art. These include temporary exhibitions, seminars, workshops, concerts, discussions, poetry readings, film series, and lectures. Visitors to the center can also explore the monastery itself, which showcases significant artistic and archaeological heritage.

The CAAC's collection, dating back to 1957, features works by artists such as Luis Gordillo, Candida Hofer, Rebecca Horn, Pablo Palazuelo, Joseph Kosuth, and Louise Bourgeois. It especially highlights contemporary Andalusian art and its interplay with other national and international art scenes.

Guests can also tour the historical parts of the former monastery, which include various chapels, the priory cell, church, sacristy, cloisters, refectory, gardens, and orchards. Since 1994, the center has curated themed exhibitions that delve into different facets of the Monastery, displaying items from its archives that relate to significant contemporary artistic developments.
