Chattanooga Choo-Choo, Chattanooga

The Chattanooga Choo-Choo, formerly Terminal Station, is one of Chattanooga’s most iconic landmarks, blending history with modern entertainment and culture. Originally built in 1909 as a grand Beaux-Arts-style railway station designed by Donn Barber, the station served as a major transportation hub for the Southern Railway System. It was known for its impressive arched entrance, brass chandeliers, and an 82-foot domed ceiling with a skylight. With 14 tracks serving seven passenger platforms, it was one of the most important train stations in the South.

The station's legacy was cemented in 1941 when Glenn Miller’s hit song “Chattanooga Choo Choo” immortalized it in American pop culture, telling the story of a train journey from New York to Chattanooga’s Track 29. After train service ended, Terminal Station was converted into a hotel in 1973, operating under the Chattanooga Choo-Choo name until 2023.

Today, the historic Terminal Station complex remains a lively entertainment district in downtown Chattanooga. The MacArthur Building, formerly the hotel, has been rebranded as The Hotel Chalet by Trestle Studio, a Chicago-based development group. While overnight stays are no longer available in vintage train cars, the area still offers a mix of bars, restaurants, shops, and attractions. Visitors can enjoy a relaxing afternoon at The Gardens, take a stroll along Station Street, or sip handcrafted spirits at the on-site distillery.

Those looking for adventure can try the Runaway Train Transport escape experience, where participants have just one hour to "escape" a simulated runaway train car. Whether visiting for history, nightlife, or a one-of-a-kind Chattanooga experience, the Chattanooga Choo-Choo remains a must-see destination.
