Chiesa di San Giacomo (Church of San Giacomo), Como
Nestled in the historic heart of Como, just behind the Broletto palace and close to the Cathedral, the Church of San Giacomo is a quietly captivating chapel with roots stretching back to the 11th century. While the exact date of its founding isn’t documented, early records refer to it in 1144, and many experts believe its construction began in the late episcopacy of Bishop Rainaldo around 1080–85. Before the municipality’s seat moved to the nearby Broletto in 1215, this church served not only as a place of worship but also played a civic role, hosting early municipal assemblies.
Over the centuries, San Giacomo has undergone significant transformations. In the late 16th and 17th centuries, its original façade and several bays were demolished to enlarge the square, and Baroque renovations altered the floor level, vaults, and columns, effectively reshaping the interior. In the 20th century, restoration efforts aimed to revive its Romanesque character, including rebuilding its octagonal lantern dome and recovering elements of the original layout.
Inside, the atmosphere is serene and understated: thick cylindrical pillars of Moltrasio limestone support the nave’s semi-circular arches, reflecting the austere elegance of Lombard–Romanesque style. The subtle interior is enriched with frescoes and altars from later periods, creating a layered visual journey through centuries of local devotion and artistry.
Today, the Church of San Giacomo offers visitors a peaceful respite from the bustling square outside-a space perfectly suited to quiet reflection. Though smaller and less ornate than some of Como’s grander churches, its historic character and well-preserved architecture make it a hidden gem. Located in Guido Grimoldi Square, it's a convenient, atmospheric stop for anyone walking between the Cathedral and Broletto.
