Cinema Valli, Pula
Cinema Valli holds the distinction of being Pula’s first real cinema and the only one preserved in its original glory. Its location, adorned with ancient stone walls from Antiquity, adds to its mystique, having witnessed the city’s evolution through various historical periods. Pula was introduced to cinema in 1896 with screenings at Politeama Ciscutti, now the Istrian National Theatre. By 1906, when Pula became the main base of the Austrian war fleet, the city established its first permanent cinema, marking the beginning of its longstanding romance with film.
Throughout the 20th century, Cinema Valli experienced numerous transformations, reflecting the political and cultural shifts in Pula. Originally named L’Alhambra during the Austrian era, it expanded in 1919 to accommodate a growing audience interested in films and sports meetings, particularly boxing. Under Italian rule, it adopted the fascist symbol and the name ‘Sala Umberto’. Later, as the Central House of Culture, it was renamed Cinema Zagreb, a title it held for many years before becoming Cinema Valli.
Cinema Valli is celebrated not just as a place to watch films but as an immersive experience. Unlike modern multiplexes focused on commercial titles, it champions the art of cinema in its entirety, offering a diverse range of world film hits, and European, and independent productions. As a member of prestigious international film organizations like Europa Cinemas and CICAE, Cinema Valli holds a significant place on the global cinematic map. It is renowned for its dedication to showcasing classics and retrospectives, making it a haven for film aficionados.
