City Cemetery, Ghent

City Cemetery, Ghent

The City Cemetery of Ghent, located northwest of the city center, is a historic and serene burial ground that resembles a garden, adorned with numerous monuments and statues. This cemetery is notable for its military plots of various nationalities, including the British Commonwealth.

The Commonwealth section features 86 graves from World War I, mainly of prisoners of war who died while in German captivity. Additionally, two graves were relocated to this site from Jabbeke Churchyard after the Armistice. Nearby, there are also 111 graves from the World War II period, marking the cemetery as a significant site of remembrance for both world wars.

Historically, Ghent played a strategic role during both World Wars. The city was briefly held by French Marines and the British 7th Division in October 1914 before falling to German forces, who maintained control until November 10, 1918, when the city was liberated by Belgian forces. During World War II, the Germans once again occupied Ghent from May 1940 until the city's liberation on September 10, 1944. Notably, the main conflict near Ghent during this period occurred at the junction of the Ghent-Bruges and Terneuzen canals, and significant fighting also took place in the northern part of the city during its liberation.

Overall, the City Cemetery of Ghent stands as a poignant reminder of the city’s turbulent history, serving as a final resting place for soldiers of many nationalities and a testament to the shared sacrifices of the world wars.
