City Hall, Bloomington
Waldron Arts Center, also known as the Old City Hall and Fire Station, stands as a historic landmark in Bloomington. Constructed in 1915, this three-story rectangular building showcases Beaux-Arts style architecture, characterized by its elegant limestone façade. Over the years, the building underwent several additions in 1950 and 1972, enhancing its functionality while preserving its historic charm. The modest entrance portico adds to its architectural allure, inviting visitors to explore its rich history and cultural significance.
Throughout its storied past, Waldron Arts Center has served various purposes, reflecting the evolving needs of the Bloomington community. Initially functioning as Bloomington’s City Hall, it later housed the city’s police and fire departments. In 1990, the City deeded the property to the Bloomington Area Arts Council, marking the beginning of its transformation into a vibrant cultural hub.
Since then, the building has been home to art galleries, classrooms for art education, performance spaces, meeting rooms, and offices. Notably, since 1994, it has served as the headquarters for WFHB Community Radio, further solidifying its role as a focal point for artistic expression and community engagement. After a period under Ivy Tech's ownership and operation as a community art center, the City of Bloomington regained ownership in 2020. Following a task force's recommendation, Constellation Stage and Screen took over management in July 2022, ensuring that Waldron Arts Center continues to thrive as a cherished cultural asset for generations to come.
