De Hoeg Brögk (High Bridge), Maastricht

The High Bridge (Hoge Brug) in Maastricht is a pedestrian and bicycle bridge that spans the Meuse River, providing a crucial link between the city’s historic center and the modern Ceramique district. Designed by Belgian architect René Greisch, the steel arch bridge was opened in 2003 and has since become an essential route for cyclists and pedestrians navigating the city.

The bridge extends 261 meters in length, with a width of 7.20 meters, and rises 10 meters above the water level. The highest point of its arch reaches 26 meters. Built without piers in the river, its deck is suspended by diagonally tensioned cables to comply with shipping regulations set by the Department of Public Works. The steep inclines at both ends of the bridge necessitated a 'lazy staircase' construction, and lifts are available at both entrances for accessibility.

The High Bridge starts at Maastricht’s City Park on the western bank and leads to Square 1992 in the Ceramique district on the eastern bank. Additionally, it connects the city’s historic Stadspark with Charles Eyck Park. The bridge is an excellent spot for scenic views over the Meuse River, and from its vantage point, visitors can enjoy the picturesque sights of Maastricht’s skyline.

In 2004, the High Bridge won the Steel Prize awarded by the Building with Steel Foundation, recognizing its innovative and elegant design. Today, it remains a vital part of Maastricht’s infrastructure, serving not only as a functional crossing but also as a symbol of the city's blend of historical charm and modern development.
