De Liefde Aapotheek (De Liefde Pharmacy), Utrecht
Standing proudly on Voorstraat, just a stone’s throw from Neude, De Liefde Pharmacy is one of Utrecht’s finest Art Nouveau landmarks. Built between 1903 and 1904, this architectural gem was designed by R. Rijksen and commissioned by Johan de Liefde, after whom it takes its name.
The building’s asymmetrical façade, white brickwork, and hexagonal turret on the upper right corner make it a striking presence on the street. The ground floor features an ornate shopfront in natural stone, complete with a large arch and skylight, embodying the elegance of the Art Nouveau movement. Its decorative richness and unique design have earned it a national monument status since 2001.
Once a bustling pharmacy, the space has changed over time. Since March 2021, a clothing store has occupied the ground floor, yet the building remains a symbol of early 20th-century craftsmanship in Utrecht’s architectural landscape. Despite its modern use, De Liefde Pharmacy remains one of the city's most celebrated Art Nouveau structures, offering a fascinating contrast to the historic Voorstraat, which dates back to the 14th century and is home to several other monumental buildings.
Whether you're an architecture enthusiast or simply wandering through Utrecht’s historic streets, De Liefde Pharmacy is a must-see example of Dutch Art Nouveau at its best.
