Devon House, Kingston

Devon House, Kingston (must see)

The Devon House Mansion, one of Jamaica's renowned historic landmarks, was brought to life by the vision of George Stiebel, Jamaica's pioneering Black millionaire. Having amassed his fortune through gold mining in South America, Stiebel joined the ranks of three prosperous Jamaicans who constructed magnificent residences in the late 19th century, situated at the intersection of Trafalgar Road and Hope Road. Appropriately, this corner became known as the Millionaires’ Corner.

An exquisite fusion of Caribbean and Georgian architectural styles, the Devon House Mansion boasts a meticulously curated assortment of Jamaican, English, and French antique pieces and replicas. Its majestic presence overlooks an expansive, flawlessly maintained lawn adorned with vibrant greenery. Devon House received the esteemed designation of a national monument in 1990 from the Jamaica National Heritage Trust. Entering the mansion is possible via a guided tour.

Over the years, Devon House has transcended its origins as the residence of George Stiebel, evolving into a symbol of enjoyable, family-oriented entertainment and leisure in Kingston. Visitors are invited to embark on tours, indulge in shopping, savour culinary delights, and unwind in its welcoming atmosphere.

Two of the complex's highlights are its bakery and ice cream shop. The former can be found behind the mansion, in the north-eastern corner of the courtyard. The bakery boasts delicious Jamaican patties, which are pastries containing various savoury fillings. Alternatively, you can also grab a slice of cake or one of the international desserts and enjoy them on a bench outside.

The building furthest north of the mansion is Devon House's famous ice cream shop. Look for the “Grape-Nut” or “Blue Mountain Coffee” flavours. The ice cream is internationally renowned, so much so that National Geographic's book “Food Journeys of a Lifetime” ranks Devon House as the world’s fourth-best place to enjoy ice cream.
