EdVenture, Columbia
Welcome to EdVenture, the Southeast’s largest children’s museum, and Columbia’s ultimate headquarters for curiosity, creativity, and healthy chaos. Located on Gervais Street, right next to the South Carolina State Museum, EdVenture has been delighting young minds (and their equally curious adults) since opening its doors on November 8, 2003.
Spanning an impressive 92,000 square feet, EdVenture features 8 vibrant galleries, two resource centers, a 200-seat theater, and roughly 350 interactive exhibits designed to spark wonder. Of the total space, 40,000 square feet is packed with immersive exhibit galleries, labs, and visitor amenities, while an additional 7,000 square feet of outdoor gallery space brings the adventure right to the museum’s doorstep.
At the heart of the experience-literally-is Eddie, the world’s largest 10-year-old. This 40-foot-tall, three-story anatomical wonder is more than just a statue. Kids can climb into his vertebrae, explore his insides, and slide out through his digestive tract. His heart alone weighs over 500 pounds and can comfortably fit an entire family. (Yes, he makes noises. Yes, they’re realistic. You’ve been warned.)
Beyond Eddie, EdVenture is a sprawling hands-on science and art playground. Budding builders, makers, and inventors will find their happy place among the workshops overflowing with everything from clay and wood to circuit boards and wire. Stations are designed with age and ability in mind, so there’s something for every level of maker.
The museum’s culinary side isn’t just for pretend play either. Little chefs can dive into real recipes at the Cooking Lab-led by two culinary-trained chefs-while younger visitors explore Busy Bee Farm, The Neighborhood Market, and Little Spot Diner, learning the farm-to-table cycle in adorable style.
Looking for high-flying fun? Explore the 1,700-square-foot aviation gallery featuring a Boeing 757, flight simulators, and imaginative play. Car fans can rev up at Auto Works and Dalmatian Station. Outside, enjoy butterfly gardens and splash zones on a “park once” campus that includes the Columbia Canal and Riverfront Park.
Whether you call it learning or just plain fun, EdVenture is one giant hands-on experience that refuses to sit still. Bring your family, your questions, your sense of wonder-and maybe an extra change of clothes.
