Eglise du Saint-Esprit (Church of the Holy Spirit), Aix-en-Provence
The Église du Saint-Esprit, or Church of the Holy Spirit, was built between 1706 and 1728 by architects Laurent and Georges Vallon. It replaced the Hôpital du Saint-Esprit and several nearby houses. The church was first called Église Saint-Jérôme, after Archbishop Jérôme de Grimaldi (1655–1683), and was dedicated in 1716. Its interior decoration, including sculpture and painting, was completed between 1726 and 1728.
The exterior has a simple classical façade with pilasters and a triangular pediment. Opposite the church stands the Clocher des Augustins, a bell tower dating from 1677, topped with a wrought-iron structure. Inside, the layout follows a Latin cross set within a rectangular plan, linking the transept arms to the side aisles and creating a wide, open space.
The interior includes artworks from different periods. A key piece is the Retable du Parlement (1520–1525), showing members of the Parliament of Provence as the twelve apostles. The church also has 18th-century carvings and painted decoration. Its organ was moved here in 1791, with parts dating to 1668. Today, it remains active, serves the Catholic student community, and has been listed as a monument historique since 1985.

In the Footsteps of Paul Cézanne
Paul Cézanne, often called the “father of modern art” for bridging 19th-century post-impressionism and the birth of early modernism, caused a bit of a stir early in his career. While staying with Doctor Gachet in Auvers-sur-Oise, he painted his take on Manet’s Olympia-but with a twist. Aix-en-Provence Introduction Walking Tour
Aix-en-Provence may not have coastal views, but it compensates in style with its Roman bathwater and city logistics. Founded in 123 BC by Roman consul Gaius Sextius Calvinus, this southern French settlement-originally named Aquae Sextiae, which means “Waters of Sextius”-was built around its thermal springs and the promise of a good soak. Centuries later, the name was streamlined to “Aix”,... view more
