Faravohitra Church, Antananarivo
Faravohitra Church, nestled atop Faravohitra Hill in the Analakely district of Antananarivo, is a striking red-brick Roman Catholic landmark with a rich architectural and historical heritage. Built in 1870 under the design of architect Cameron, the church was dedicated to John the Baptist. It showcases a unique neo-Byzantine style combined with Romanesque features, evident in its terracotta brick construction and arched windows. Towering over the cityscape, its high-gabled bell tower, adorned with clocks on either side, makes the church easily recognizable from afar.
The church’s founding parish, Saint-Jean-Baptiste, was established in 1898 by Jesuit Father Joseph de Villèle, a Reunionese priest deeply dedicated to his work in the community. Beyond the church's spiritual role, Father de Villèle also founded Madagascar’s first orphanage within the parish, which cared for both mixed-race and Malagasy children. This initiative marked an important social contribution to the area, reflecting the church’s lasting commitment to local welfare.
Faravohitra Church’s location, at the corner of Delord Street and Fredy Rajaofera Street, offers not only an architectural delight but also a stunning panoramic view over downtown Antananarivo.
