Fifth Maine Museum, Portland

Fifth Maine Museum, Portland

Nestled on scenic Peaks Island just off the coast of Portland, the Fifth Maine Museum occupies the beautifully restored Fifth Maine Regiment Memorial Hall, originally built in 1888 by Civil War veterans of the Fifth Maine Volunteer Infantry. This Queen Anne‑style lodge served as a summer reunion spot for veterans and their families, complete with ocean‑view verandas, stained glass windows, and a rugged three‑story tower. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978, the building stands as both a poignant memorial and an architectural gem.

Today, the museum weaves together two compelling narratives: the storied history of the Fifth Maine Regiment and the cultural evolution of Peaks Island. Exhibits include rich Civil War artefacts-uniforms, weapons, flags captured in key battles-as well as personal letters and photographs. Beyond military history, the museum explores Peaks Island’s transformation from a bustling Victorian vacation destination-dubbed the “Coney Island of the North”-to its strategic World War II coastal defense role, highlighted in the “Defending the Coast: Warfare in Casco Bay” exhibit, which opened in May 2024.

Open seasonally from late May through October and available by appointment during spring and fall shoulder seasons, the museum offers an immersive experience. Visitors can stroll through the spacious Memorial Hall, admire its period architecture and stained glass, and wander the adjacent gardens and coastal outlooks. A stop here not only deepens your understanding of Maine’s Civil War legacy but also connects you to the vibrant island community that has nurtured it for generations. Whether you’re a history buff, architecture lover, or casual traveler, the Fifth Maine Museum offers a serene and meaningful glimpse into the past, one veranda at a time.
