First Lutheran Church, Ketchikan
The First Lutheran Church is a striking example of Gothic Revival architecture and a treasured piece of the city’s history. Designed by Seattle architect W.G. Brust and constructed in 1930 by local builder Carl Foss, the two-story wood-frame structure is instantly recognizable by its elegant three-story tower. The church features Gothic-style lancet windows, grouped in threes on the second floor, and a welcoming arched entry topped with a multi-light transom. These architectural elements, along with its landmark status on the National Register of Historic Places (added in 1987), reflect the church’s enduring presence in the community.
Originally founded in 1923 as a Seamen’s Center, First Lutheran served as a haven for itinerant fishermen and mariners navigating Alaska’s rugged coastal waters. The church has long held symbolic significance as a literal and figurative beacon-guiding Merchant Mariners during World War II, welcoming cruise ship visitors, and remaining visible to local fishing fleets. It also houses one of Alaska’s few pipe organs, further enhancing its distinction among historic churches in the region.
Today, First Lutheran Church remains deeply woven into the fabric of Ketchikan life. Beyond weekly worship, its sanctuary hosts performances by the Ketchikan Chamber Orchestra and opens its doors to various community initiatives. From hosting recovery groups and Girl Scouts to supporting nonprofits like Love in Action, the church continues to uphold its founding mission of service and sanctuary.
