Galleri Gallo, Aarhus

Gallery Gallo in Aarhus is a distinctive grassroots art gallery with a mission to empower artists who are either psychiatric users or have mental difficulties, providing them with a platform to display their artworks. Founded in 1980 by Johannes Nielsen, a consultant and advocate for mental health through artistic expression, the gallery emerged from his connections and efforts in organizing art exhibitions at the Psychiatric Hospital. He believed deeply in the therapeutic power of creativity and self-expression for individuals facing mental challenges.

The gallery is uniquely managed by psychiatric users, although it is inclusive and open to artists without mental health conditions as well. This inclusive approach aims to challenge and broaden public perceptions and attitudes towards mental health, encouraging visitors to engage deeply with the art and confront their possible prejudices.

Housed originally in an old warehouse on Nørre Alle, the gallery has been transformed into a bright and cozy space thanks to the dedicated efforts of the original Gallery Group and a team of conscientious objectors. Over the years, Gallery Gallo has seen a diverse range of exhibitions with many artists returning to showcase their work multiple times. Notable exhibitors include Ovartaci, Baukje Zijlsta, Jan Nedergård, Jørgen Rud, Kirsten Kjær, Efraim Espino, and even inmates from Danish prisons.

Visitors and supporters of Gallery Gallo can contribute through membership in the Support Circle, reinforcing the gallery's commitment to fostering a supportive environment where art transcends mere aesthetics to become a means of personal and communal healing.
