United States Olympic & Paralympic Museum, Colorado Springs

United States Olympic & Paralympic Museum, Colorado Springs

The United States Olympic & Paralympic Museum opened on July 30, 2020, as part of the City for Champions project in Colorado Springs. Despite its Olympic name, it operates independently from the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee and focuses on honoring American Olympic and Paralympic athletes. Construction began on June 9, 2017, with Colorado Springs chosen as its location due to its ties to the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee and National Governing Bodies.

Spanning 60,000 square feet at a cost of $91 million, the museum is designed for accessibility, with an elevator to the third floor and a winding, step-free path through galleries, a theater, and a gift shop. It complies with Americans with Disabilities Act standards, offering technologies like captions, audio tracks, American Sign Language translations, and RFID-enabled lanyards for visually-disabled visitors. Team USA athletes played a role in its development.

Architecturally, the museum was designed by Diller Scofidio and Renfro with a vision of creating a dynamic and visually striking building. When viewed from above, the building's layout resembles a discus thrower in the midst of a throw. Its exterior is composed of 9,000 distinct diamond-shaped reflective aluminum panels, each one unique in its design, creating an eye-catching and distinctive appearance.
