Great Plains Transportation Museum, Wichita
The Great Plains Transportation Museum invites visitors to step back in time and explore the region’s rich railroad heritage. It showcases a remarkable outdoor display of six locomotives, including the massive Santa Fe steam locomotive and the sleek Santa Fe FP45 diesel, both the last of their kind built for Santa Fe.
Inside, you'll discover an array of artifacts-lanterns, tools, prints, historic signage, and even a mock-up mechanical stoker once used to train steam locomotive crews.
Incorporated in 1983 by a dedicated group of railroad enthusiasts, the museum emerged from the remnants of an earlier venture housed in Union Station. Since opening its doors in 1986, it has grown into a center for restoration, research, and public education, garnering a loyal audience that includes visitors from across Kansas, the United States, and abroad.
