Hala Stulecia (Centennial Hall), Wroclaw

Hala Stulecia (Centennial Hall), Wroclaw

Centennial Hall is a historic building in Wrocław. Designed by architect Max Berg and built between 1911 and 1913, it was intended as a versatile venue for exhibitions, concerts, theater, opera, and sporting events. Today, it still hosts sports events, business conferences, and concerts.

As one of the earliest examples of reinforced concrete architecture, Centennial Hall was designated as one of Poland's official national Historic Monuments on April 20, 2005. This designation includes the Four Domes Pavilion, the Pergola, and the Iglica, and is maintained by the National Heritage Board of Poland. In 2006, the hall was also recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The hall's cupola, made of reinforced concrete, was groundbreaking at the time of its construction, with an inner diameter of 69 meters and a height of 42 meters, making it the largest structure of its kind. The building features a symmetrical quatrefoil design with a central space that seats 7,000 people. The dome itself is 23 meters high, constructed from steel and glass. Centennial Hall became an important reference point for the development of reinforced concrete structures in the 20th century.

At the center of the structure is a superior dome with a lantern, and the interior of the dome features a pattern resembling the Iron Cross, which led to its concealment during the Communist era in Poland. Originally, the hall was equipped with a Sauer pipe organ built by Walcker Orgelbau, which, with 15,133 pipes and 200 stops, was the largest in the world at that time. Karl Straube first played the organ on September 24, 1913, performing Max Reger's specially composed piece, "Introduction, Passacaglia, and Fugue, Op. 127." After World War II, most parts of the organ were moved to the rebuilt Wrocław Cathedral.
