Hennepin Center for the Arts, Minneapolis

Built in 1888 as a Masonic Temple, this historic building escaped demolition in the early 1970s thanks to a dedicated group of preservationists. Since its 1979 reopening, it’s become a hub for theater, dance, and music, hosting the Illusion Theater and providing space for countless rehearsals, performances, and classes. Thousands of visitors, from budding performers to seasoned artists, pass through its doors each year. The building is part of the Cowles Center complex, which includes the modern Cowles Center for Dance and the Performing Arts, the historic Shubert Theatre, and the HCA building.

Illusion Theater, perched on the top floor, serves as a creative incubator for new works. Over the years, it has debuted more than 500 plays, many of which have gone on to national acclaim.
