Hospital of St Cross, Winchester

Hospital of St Cross, Winchester (must see)

The Hospital of St Cross and Almshouse of Noble Poverty stands as a medieval almshouse and is often hailed as "England's oldest and most perfect almshouse." Founded in 1136 by Henry of Blois, the Bishop of Winchester and the grandson of William the Conqueror, this historic institution reflects a rich legacy of charity and care.

The hospital's architecture, constructed primarily of stone, encompasses two quadrangles. The Outer Quadrangle to the north comprises significant structures, including the 16th-century outer gate, the 14th-century brewhouse, and the guest wing and kitchen dating back to the 15th century. Notably, the three-story Beaufort Tower, constructed around 1450, adds both aesthetic and historical value. Cardinal Beaufort's weathered statue graces one of its niches, commemorating the Bishop of Winchester.

Passing through the Beaufort Tower leads to the Inner Quadrangle, where the 14th-century Brethren's Hall takes center stage. This hall, with an impressive timber screen and gallery, served as a gathering space for the Brethren and 100 poor men. The 12th- and 13th-century church in the south-east corner, resembling a miniature cathedral, stands as a testament to the hospital's architectural significance. The stone-vaulted structure, featuring transepts and a central tower, boasts walls made of stone from various regions, including Caen, Dorset, and the Isle of Wight.

The hospital, adopting a Transitional Norman/Gothic style, continues to fulfill its mission by providing accommodation for 25 elderly men known as "The Brothers." These individuals are under the care of "The Master," preserving an ancient tradition known as the "Wayfarer's Dole." This tradition involves offering a small horn cup of ale and a piece of bread, a practice initiated by a Cluniac monk. Anyone seeking the dole can request it at the Porter's Lodge.
