House of the Seven Gables, Salem

House of the Seven Gables, Salem (must see)

The House of the Seven Gables, also known as the Turner House or Turner-Ingersoll Mansion, is a captivating colonial mansion that has left an indelible mark on American literature and history. This iconic structure, built in 1668, derives its name from the seven distinctive gables that grace its exterior and has become a symbol of both Nathaniel Hawthorne's literary genius and Salem's enduring charm.

The House of the Seven Gables achieved literary immortality through Nathaniel Hawthorne's 1851 novel of the same name. Hawthorne, a native of Salem, drew inspiration from the mansion's intriguing history and unique architectural features to weave a tale of dark secrets, ancestral curses, and redemption. As a result, the house gained worldwide recognition, becoming a must-visit destination for literature enthusiasts and history buffs alike.

Today, the House of the Seven Gables stands as a living monument to the past, a non-profit museum that welcomes visitors from far and wide to explore its storied halls. Tourists are offered a glimpse into the colonial era as they traverse the mansion's rooms, each brimming with historical artifacts, period furnishings, and echoes of centuries gone by. An admission fee supports the preservation of this cultural treasure and sustains its educational mission.

The mansion's history is as intricate as the gables that adorn its façade. Originally constructed for Captain John Turner in 1668, it remained in the Turner family for three generations. Over the years, it underwent transformations that reflect the evolving architectural tastes of different eras. John Turner II introduced Georgian style elements in the 18th century, while later owners, the Ingersolls, modified the structure to their liking.

The House of the Seven Gables underwent a transformative restoration in the early 20th century under the stewardship of Caroline O. Emmerton, the founder of the House of Seven Gables Settlement Association. Boston architect Joseph Everett Chandler led this ambitious effort, meticulously preserving the mansion's historical significance while reconstructing missing gables. This dedication to preservation and heritage culminated in the mansion's designation as a National Historic Landmark District in 2007.
