Iglesia de Nostra Senora de la Merced (Church of Our Lady of Mercy), Ronda

Iglesia de Nostra Senora de la Merced (Church of Our Lady of Mercy), Ronda

The Church of Our Lady of Mercy is a modest yet historically rich religious site, dating back to the late 16th century.

The church’s interior consists of three naves, with the central one covered by a barrel vault featuring lunettes. Pilasters and arches divide the main space from the side naves. The transept is topped by a dome with paired windows, while the presbytery has a rectangular vaulted ceiling decorated with paintings.

Outside, the façade is organized into three sections by brick pilasters and includes a stone doorway with a rounded arch detailed with plant and diamond motifs. A distinctive octagonal bell tower made of plastered brick rises on the right side, contributing to the church’s refined presence in the historic center.

Inside, the church is home to one of Spain’s most important relics, the Hand of Saint Teresa, whose history intertwines with fascinating stories of miracles and political intrigue. The adjoining convent was originally one of the wealthiest occupied by the Order of Mercedarians in the early 1600s.

Though much of its artwork has been lost, including a series of reliefs depicting the life of Saint Pedro Nolasco, the church continues to preserve its spiritual and cultural significance. Visitors can also experience a unique local tradition by purchasing biscuits made by the nuns, adding a quaint and slightly surreal touch to the visit.

Set near Ronda’s main road with views toward the bullfighting ring and the gorge, La Merced combines architectural charm with deep-rooted historical and religious importance.

On the right side of the façade is the octagonal tower of plastered brick that imitates stone masonry.
